Philippe & Sarah Morin homestead

I finally was lucky enough to visit the Philippe Morin and Sarah Summers homestead, which was owned by the Winters family when I was growing up in Cumberland. Phil McNeely, Tom McNeely and Maureen Morin all have memories of this place. Maureen was born there, Phil and Tom remember attending picnics there. It's set on the highest point of land in that area with a beautivul view of the Ottawa River and Laurentian Mountains. The house is now owned by the Ottawa Public School Board, McSkimming… Continue

Philippe Morin Will (registered Apr 26, 1948)

Philippe Morin was the son of Antoine Morin. He married Sara Summers and was the father of , among others, Uncle Treffle, George Morin (my great grandfather), Uncle Jim Morin who ran the little snack bar in Cumberland, Uncle Richard who married Mae McNeely, . I uncovered his will today at the Land Registry Office in Ottawa.

"This is the last will and testament of Philippe Morin of the Township of Cumberland in the County of Russell, farmer, made this 29th day of June, 1931. I appoint my… Continue

Anne-Marie established herself there without knowing about our Acadian origins!

Secondly, my daughter Liane Boyer's fiancee, Cameron McLean, has traced his ancestor to Jacques Bourgeois, the ship's surgeon and successful farmer from Port Royal who established a… Continue

1853 Antoine Morin buys land with oats and hay

LAND IN CUMBERLAND TOWNSHIP FOR A FEW BAGS OF OATS AND A LOAD OF HAY (submitted by Gerard Boyer, Sept. 2009)

As I continue to uncover material dealing with my Morin ancestors, I couldn’t help but copy the following deed of land from Betsy Powell to Antoine Morin in 1854. The document is full of legal land language but this land deal is an interesting one. I found a mint of useful information at the Land Registry Office at the Provincial Court House on Elgin St. in downtown… Continue

Babin

Claire and I spent some time with a friend of mine called Pat Babin. I met him here in Kemptville and we have been friends for the past 14 years I think. Claire did some digging and his name turns out on the same plaque has our acadian ancestors. Same area. Such a small world.
